Holy Orders

Holy Orders is a Sacrament of Vocation along with Matrimony. The Sacrament of Holy Orders confers a sacred power upon the Priest for the service of all of God's people. The ordained minister exercises his service by teaching, divine worship and pastoral governance. Since the beginning of the church, the ordained ministry has been conferred and exercised in three degrees: that of Bishops; that of Priests; and that of Deacons. The Bishop receives the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Priest is given the privilege of celebrating all of the sacraments with the exception of Holy Orders. His greatest treasure and the focus of his life is the Eucharist. The Deacon assists the priests and bishops in a unique role of service. Today, more than ever, we need to "pray to the Lord of harvest, that He send laborer's into the vineyard" (Matt. 9:38) from our own families, for "the harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few" (Matt. 9:37). With hopeful confidence then, we ask the Great High Priest to answer our prayers by saying, "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding" (Jer. 3:15).

Vocation Discernment Retreats for Diocesan Priesthood

Discernment Retreats for Diocesan Priesthood are offered periodically by the Diocesan Vocation Office for men (ages senior in high school to 45) who feel that they have heard the Lord's call to Priesthood. The retreat includes reflections on Discernment of a Vocation, Seminary Formation, the Life of a Diocesan Priest and a discussion of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Quiet time, liturgy, group discussion and opportunities for a private meeting with the retreat director are offered during the course of the weekend. Eligibility for the retreat includes completing and returning an application to the Vocation Office as well as requesting one's pastor or priest friend to write a letter or make a phone call of recommendation to the Vocation Director.
